February 2023

Some days are pierced through

With ambulances’ shrieks.

And a cold grey blob of grief

Settles inside your lungs,

So deep you can’t spit it or swallow,

You hug your own hunching back,

For all the human warmth has melted

Into narrow capillaries of holding on.

Somewhere, not too far from here,

A child has left a wooden railroad,

And took a little train car with him.

To play on shabbat.

They’ll never meet again,

The car and the track.

For the little train is lost

On the blood-soaked bus stop,

By the little hand that held it in play.

And the meaning is written somewhere

In letters of fire on a sheet of rain.

Somewhere, not too far from here,

Neighbours are tiptoeing around her,

The mother whose life has turned

To lead in her veins.

Somewhere, really close to here,

All our mothers are holding onto

Their children really tight.

Thinking of the fresh grave

With a little train on it.

A new grave in our thirsty land,

The cost of hatred.

The price of discord.

The Heavenly Dragon

In the vast empty cosmos

For countless eons

He hung and he waited.

He stayed there, observing.

A power of seeing

A gift or recording

Committing to memory

All that transpires.

With just a swing of his tail

He could have explored

Countless galaxies

Stars and black holes.

Yet his gaze was affixed

To one speck of the dust

Covered with ocean.

Entrusted with witnessing

The matters of humans,

The enormous green dragon

Was weeping in silence,

Lamenting the doings

Of the ones God so trusted.

The abundant blue planet

Being plunged into chaos.

Bloodshed and starvation

Slit deep at his essence.

God refused him the answers,

Not befitting the creature

He created for testimony.

Dragon's keening arose

The pitch jarring the Universe,

One the day when the humans

Erased ten myriads as one.

The dragon swore an oath

Upon all that is holy,

Making God swear

A somber oath in return:

-I will split into myriads

And descend into them,

While You bear witness

To all that transpires,

Injustice and inequity,

You swore not to forget!

Awaken Your mercy,

Hasten the day of the End!

-You will split into thousands,

To urge their souls' connection.

-Will You knit me together

When the Redemption arrives?

-Upon My Right Hand,

My beloved creature will live!

To this day, Hologram images

Of the mighty green dragon

Flicker in hearts of the humans,

Pushing them to believe.

If you look, deep and careful,

A profound search of your heart,

Perhaps you'll find a green dragon

Who just couldn't bear to watch.

Tarot and the Serpent

The Serpent sneaked the cards

From God's pocket.

A tail flip tossed the cards

High into the air.

One card cleaved the sky

Letting out unbridled heat.

Another card dulled the wits

Of the power-wielders.

One hit the foundations

Of the Earth's core

And confused them.

Dams burst forth,

Fires engulfed the land.

One more flipped open

The lower Astral door.

A card severed the masks

Keeping the lies inviolable.

Deceit oozed out

Smearing the Chariot.

The Tower shuddered

Calling to the Sun and the Moon.

Until God's own Hand

Caught the spinning deck

Flying asunder

Stabilized the Wheel

Gagged the Serpent

And rolled him up

Into a Throne of Judgement.

Urged the Truth to grow forth

Offering shade

Of figs and olives

Blessed by the Land.

The shackles of irony

Dropped off the City of Peace,

And ever so slowly,

Daring to trust,

We suckled the honey

Of the flowers

On the Tree of Life.
